THE ORDER OF THE JUG AND THE POTTEN FAMILY

The Order is originally called

ORDEN DE LA JARRA (or TERRAZA).

It was founded in the honour of

SANTA MARIA DEL LIRIO,

NUESTRA SENORA DE LA FLOR DE LIS

SPAIN/NAVARRA 1040

After a Marian vision (for its symbol see: Wikipedia above)

King Garcia Sanchez founds the Orden de la Jarra, the first Military Knight Order of Spain (with later members in all Europe)

 

The Spanish POTIZ/POTIN family adopts in Rioja the widely-spread symbol ("JARRA" and "POTIN" both mean "water jug")

 

SPAIN/ASTURIAS 1400

The town of Siero takes the symbol as coat of arms

 

ANTWERP 1600

A Protestant type of peasant lace called "POTTEN KANT"

uses the symbol, but leaves out the Marian lily !

 

FRANCE 17/18th century

Two POTIN/POTTIN coat of arms use the symbol with lily

 

GERMANY 1751

First occurence of symbol with lily on POTTEN earthenware

(although they are Protestants).

They use it through three generations.
